The number of older GLBT Americans was recently estimated to be approximately three million in the United States, a number that will only grow as the populations ages.  Many elderly GLBT people do not have adequate access to medical care, affordable housing or social services due to institutionalized heterosexism and transphobia.  Many providers have limited training and information on how to work with the populations of GLBT seniors and any unique needs they may have.

Another challenge within the aging GLBT community is the prevalence of HIV/AIDS.  As people live longer with new treatments, the population of people living with HIV/AIDS comprises a large percentage of people living with AIDS -- and is in fact twice that of people under 24 living with HIV/AIDS.
